Clove, known for its intense aroma and warm, pungent flavor, is one of the most important spice crops grown in Kerala. While native to the Maluku Islands (the “Spice Islands”) in Indonesia, cloves were introduced to India around 1800 A.D. by the East India Company. Today, the Western Ghats, particularly regions in Kerala (Calicut, Kottayam, Quilon, and Trivandrum) and Tamil Nadu, are the primary cultivation hubs in India.
